Experience the vibrant heartbeat of West Africa in this Singing Workshop led by Guinean Master Aboubacar Camara.
Traditional Songs give context to:
Why a rhythm exists
When it is played
Who it is for
How it should be expressed
The words inform the energy, phrasing, and intention of the drumming patterns and the quality of the dance steps. Without the song, the rhythm can become technically correct but culturally incomplete.
Learning the songs properly means:
Taking time with pronunciation and meaning
Understanding call-and-response structures
Feeling how melody, language, rhythm, and movement are inseparable
When the song is embodied, the drum speaks differently.
When the words are known, the dance carries purpose rather than imitation.
Open to all, whether you’ve never danced or played drums, and simply enjoy singing, or you are a drummer or dancer and would like to gain a deeper understanding of the songs, this is an authentic and uplifting opportunity to learn, move, and feel the power of song in community.
