Experience the vibrant heartbeat of West Africa in this Dance & Singing Workshop led by Guinean Master Aboubacar Camara.

Before there was choreography, before drum patterns were named and refined, there were songs; carrying history, language, meaning, and social purpose.

From the songs emerged the dances, and from the dances the rhythms that now travel the world.

Traditional Songs give context to:

  • Why a rhythm exists

  • When it is played

  • Who it is for

  • How it should be expressed

When we learn Guinean drumming and dance without fully learning the accompanying songs, something essential is lost.

In many fast-paced classes, songs are rushed, simplified, or treated as background. Words are approximated, rhythms memorised without meaning, and movement separated from its cultural voice. While this can be understandable, when the song is embodied, the drum speaks differently. When the words are known, the dance carries purpose rather than imitation.

Learning the songs properly means:

  • Taking time with pronunciation and meaning

  • Understanding call-and-response structures

  • Feeling how melody, language, rhythm, and movement are inseparable

Open to all levels, whether you are a drummer, a dancer wishing to deepen your learning, or you are neither & would just like to sing, this is an authentic and uplifting opportunity to feel the power of song in community.
