Adult Dance Movement Therapy

Individual dance movement therapy sessions are a safely held space with a qualified therapist, to work towards specific goals; be it to support and improve physical, emotional, social or mental areas of your health and wellbeing.

In the context of adult mental and emotional health, this might be for you, if you are experiencing:

  • Anxiety, stress, overwhelm

  • Symptoms of depression,

  • PTSD and other mental health issues

  • Lack of energy, motivation, or sense of purpose

  • Feel numb, dissociated, or disconnected

  • Chronic pain

  • A physical condition

Or perhaps you would like to gain a deeper sense of who you are physically, emotionally, mentally, and spiritually, or you are a creative, feeling stuck and would like to move through creative blocks.

Moving beyond traditional talk therapy

In context of an embodied approach to mental health, moving beyond the traditional talk based therapy setting, we explore the sense of self in relationship to body, emotions, thoughts, beliefs, and the way in which we perceive and respond to our life circumstances and experiences. This addresses a mind, body and cellular level which incorporates the nervous system.

By cultivating body awareness, attuning, and listening, we can gain an understanding of how your body and sense of self  responds to life’s challenges, pressures and uncertainties, and help build the necessary resources within yourself to navigate these difficult challenges to not get stuck there.

Our patterns and behaviours and how we respond to stress as adults, can stem from an imprint set up from our earlier experiences, as far back as birth and beyond, that were recorded in our nervous system. This activates under pressure or stress, influencing how we respond to challenges. We can address these, to help create new mind-body pathways for positive change.

The entry point for dance and movement

Movement exists on a continuum, from the dancing subtleties of breath, body posture, pathways of sensation, awareness of muscular tension and somatic responses, developmental movement, to more gestural, expressive dance and movement. It might be seated, on the floor, or standing.

The entry point of movement is initiated when the time is right, which for some may or may not be the first session. Your therapist will be attuning to your needs as the session unfolds, and introduce evidence informed creative processes and movement based interventions based upon your goals, and where you are at.

Individual dance therapy sessions are held in an accessible studio in Fairfield.
